Sometimes you need a restart. Like most of us, Nathaniel started Instagram with a good amount of selfies. He then restarted it (@thenathanielmanual) in 2014 and now uses it to showcase life in the big apple. Furthemore, Nathaniel runs social for Industria Creative.
How did you get started with Instagram? Why do you do it and why do you think you gained the following that you have?
I got started with Instagram in January of 2012 when I got my first iPhone (when Instagram was still only for iPhone). I didn’t use the platform to promote my blog, but did take gratuitous amounts of mirror selfies and would put them up with all sorts of fashion hashtags. I then restarted my Instagram in 2014 to be more geared toward my blog. I now blog and use social media to connect myself with other creative types in the industry and to create a better network of friends/colleagues/acquaintances. I also just love taking pictures, so I feel like I primarily use Instagram as a portfolio of my work. I think the main factors behind the following that I have is due to my keen eye for photos, my personality on the internet, and the way I put outfits together!
Tell us a little bit about your background. How did you end up in New York?
I grew up in the suburbs of Connecticut. I also grew up coming to the city since I was probably about 8 years old. I remember getting off the train at Grand Central for the first time, looking up at the mural on the ceiling and being completely awestruck. I think that may have been the spark that lit the first fire to getting me to New York. I came to New York, however, to go to school to pursue a career in visual merchandising and fashion styling. I’ve been here since 2010, but it’s beginning to feel like I’ve lived here all my life.
What do you do outside of Instagram?
Outside of Instagram & blogging, I work for a boutique experiential marketing agency in west Soho called Industria Creative. I’m their Creative Coordinator, which entails running social media accounts, in-house photography, and creative brainstorming for events, marketing campaigns, etc. Anyone who watches my Instastories or follows me on Snapchat knows I have lucked my way into having a blue French Bulldog office pup named Ollie. He’s everything.
What are your favorite places to hang in New York?
Oh man, this always a tough question for me. I feel like New York has so many different facets to it that make it enjoyable to be in. The only places I DON’T like are Times Square and Midtown…for the most part. But let’s see..I love Nolita, Soho, The West Village, Central Park, Bushwhick, Williamsburg, Greenpoint...pretty much everywhere. My favorite spot to relax, though, hands down is Hudson River Park uptown by the Upper West Side.
What’s something people who only know you thru Instagram would be surprised to know?
People that know me solely on Instagram or my blog would be surprised to know that before studying visual merchandising, I wanted to have a career on Broadway. I was wildly obsessed with musical theatre, singing, and playing the piano since I was about 9 years old. The reason that ambition went away was due to me being rejected from all universities I applied to in high school (I was the laziest, worst student ever, and my voice was not up to par with where it truly needed to be). I told myself if I couldn’t handle that rejection, there was no way I was going to be able to handle the rejection of trying to be an actor in New York. So…here I am working in fashion/marketing/social media and I couldn’t be happier!
